Custom ROM for HTC Hero improves performance

A few weeks back, SlashGear announced that a MoDaCo member got their hands on a pre-release version of the new HTC Hero/G2 ROM, which excited the HTC Hero using community as it seems to squash the performance issue bugs that were causing a lot of users (and reviewers) a lot of consternation. Well, it seems the clever folks at MoDaCo weren’t satisfied with having to wait for the official ROM to be released, so they’ve taken matters in to their own hands. They have released a custom version of the official update (the customisations include a few additional performance tweaks that weren’t part of the official ROM). Judging by the user reaction, this new ROM shows a marked improvement in performance. I’ve not installed it myself yet as I’ve had no lag issues at all with my phone so far, but, should they start to appear, I’ll be all over this like white on rice.
If you are interested in giving it a go, I’d suggest reading through the thread on the update here as there are a few people who have reported issues and it’s probably best to be prepared. Regardless of the issues other folks have had – make sure the first thing you do before trying to install the new ROM is to take a backup of your current setup using Nandroid.

Phone rooting experts theunlockr.com have a great video guide on installing a custom ROM on your Hero. See it here.
