Ok, so I’ve hit my first real stumbling block in my exploration of Android – I can’t buy any apps from the Apps Market. I went to setup my Google Checkout account today and merrily entered my card details, only to find that my trusty Maestro card isn’t supported. That’s pretty conclusively kyboshed any plans I had to purchase apps. So, to all you app developers out there; I was ready to stump up the cash to reward you for your hard work, but alas, Google aren’t having it. Actually, I’m probably being a little unfair to Google there – from what I gather, this has something to do with Mastercard forcing retailers to use the 3D Secure system which involves an additional layer of security to help prevent fraud. Apple seem to get round this by having some prices in UK pounds too, I don’t know how easy this would be to setup, but a cursory scan of the internet for people having the same problem as me revealed that there are a large number of users in the same boat – they’d love to fork out the readies for some of the non-gratis Android apps, but they don’t have a credit card. So it may actually be a worthwhile exercise for Google. Perhaps even if there were an alternative option like a Paypal payment?
