Google Phone unmasked – meet the HTC Nexus One

Following weeks and weeks of rumours, speculation and denials surrounding the “Google Phone” – a phone designed top to bottom by Google themselves, the truth has finally come out.  There will indeed be an Android phone released which, as rumoured, will be sold unlocked and will not available at any mobile carriers but instead will need to be bought outright from hardware retailers.  Contrary to the rumours however, the phone itself has been designed and created by HTC, rather than Google,  but the Big G have designed every facet of the user interface the phone employs.  The leaked codename for the phone is “Nexus One”.  For the moment, only select Google employees are testing the phone.  Here’s a quote from the official Google Mobile blog-

At Google, we are constantly experimenting with new products and technologies, and often ask employees to test these products for quick feedback and suggestions for improvements in a process we call dogfooding (from “eating your own dogfood”). Well this holiday season, we are taking dogfooding to a new level.

We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it.

Unfortunately, because dogfooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details. We hope to share more after our dogfood diet.
