Another review today, this time it’s 3D racing game, Raging Thunder by Polarbit AB. Raging Thunder is a car racing sim with a number of different options, including multiplayer. This is an Android version of a game which has been available for the iPhone for quite a while now. Here’s the description from the apps market-
Raging Thunder is a gut-churning, tyre burning racer giving you control over the most extreme muscle cars in the world! Race against time, CPU controlled opponents or up to other speed addicts.
CURRENT VERSION DOES NOT SUPPORT: Motorola Droid, HTC Tattoo
You control your car using the motion sensor on your phone, tilting left or right to steer in that direction, dragging your finger up the touchscreen to accelerate and down to decelerate. During play, you can pick up bonuses and extra cash that are littered around the tracks. You can also use two special functions – ‘boosts’ that give a temporary nitro speed jump or ‘tackles’ where you can ram a nearby car.
Gameplay is fast and frenetic, but the motion sensor controls feel slick and responsive, so you’re not handicapped by sluggish controls. The AI-controlled cars though, seem to all drive a near flawless race, which ramps up the difficulty considerably. Still, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it means you’re under pressure to drive at your very best to win through some levels, and I found myself thriving on the challenge.
One of the best features of the game though, is it’s multi-player capacity. You can play against other players, across different mobile platforms, so you’re not restricted to playing against Android users. A very nice touch to an already impressive game.
Overall, I have to say I’m very impressed. This is arguably the best game on the market at the moment, and easily the best 3D game. Excitingly, there is word that the developers, Polarbit AB, are soon to release further 3D games which, judging from the videos I’ve seen, are potentially every bit as good as Raging Thunder. For now though, Raging Thunder is the benchmark for 3D gaming on Android; it’s polished, intense and challenging, and it looks great.
Raging Thunder is available on the Android Market for €3.00. There’s also a free, Lite version if you’d rather take it for a test drive before stumping up your hard-earned. Please take note that, at present, the game is not compatible with the Motorola DROID/Milestone, or the HTC Tattoo. The developers have confirmed that they are working on a version for the DROID/Milestone.
