New games portal for Android arrives on the market
There’s a new app on the market which may appeal to those who like games. It’s a games portal called GamesPlaza which features a centralised area for Android game info, screenshots, trailers and a selection of mobile gaming related tweets. The makers of the app stipulate that all of the games on the site must be free to play, free to download, or free to try – at the end of the day though, when most paid games also have a free lite or trial version anyway, this stipulation isn’t worth the virtual paper it’s virtually written on.
I have to confess, when I heard about this app, my first reaction was one of scepticism at it’s value, but my curiosity was piqued so I downloaded it to see if it was any good. The app takes you to a well laid out mobile web page that’s optimised for your phone type, presumably allowing the site to serve you games that suit your phone. There’s nothing particularly startling here: all of the apps listed are available for download direct from the market without going through the GamesPlaza middleman, and the trailers are drawn from YouTube, but there’s no denying it’s an easier forum to browse through for games than the official Android Market, and the addition of direct links to trailers for some of the games is a nice touch.
Overall, this may appeal to some people out there, it’s definitely a simple enough site to navigate and the images and trailers makes it easy to get a feel for what a game’s about before downloading it, but I can’t shake off that feeling that I’m browsing one big advert (which I guess is essentially what this is at the end of the day).
