At last, after all the rumours, speculation and press excitement, the Google phone, the Nexus One, has finally been officially unveiled at a Google press event today. To coincide with the announcement, the not-so-secret Nexus One support pages have been re-instated at Google.com, including an a neat little interactive guide to some of the phone’s features, a 3D Tour (which has a feel which is reminiscent of HTC’s recent “You” ad campaign), and they’ve also set up a Nexus One You Tube channel.
Is it going to be an iPhone killer? I confess I have my doubts. Despite plenty of promise, the DROID didn’t really come close to toppling the iPhone in the cold light of day and the Nexus One, whilst undeniably superior to the DROID in almost all departments (save for it’s lack of a hardware keyboard if that’s your bag), isn’t actually that much of an innovative leap forward from it’s older Motorola cousin, neither in terms of hardware or software. Does it really matter if it isn’t an iPhone killer? Not to my mind. It’s still looking like one hell of a phone, and, at the end of the day, that’s the important thing.
