Android Forums member Julien has been working on a port of Android port of Quake II. The port is very much a work in progress, so don’t expect flawless performance and super-smooth framerates, but what has been released so far is pretty damned impressive. Feedback from current users of the app suggest there’s been a bit of a mixed bag of results, with the best performance being seen on the DROID/Milestone. However, the game is running (albeit more slowly) on older devices such as the G1 (running a CyanogenMod Android 1.5 custom ROM) and Hero. The progress that julien has made is impressive, and does hint at just how much the platform could capable of.
The game is controlled using the accelerometer to move and pushing the trackball or select button to fire. I found, during my run-throughs, that I was getting between 5 and 20 fps, with it averaging out at around the 15fps mark, which isn’t great, but it’s a start. The slow framerate makes the accelerometer control feel a little unresponsive at times, but I expect this will improve in tandem with any speed increase.
If you’re keen to find out more about this port of Quake II, check out julien’s web page for the project here. Please bear in mind that the port is not the finished article if you do decide to give it a spin, but the more people who try it out and leave constructive feedback, the better the chance there is for julien to get the port fully working. And then we can all get down to that relaxing pastime of shooting people in the face.
