*UPDATED*- HTC “confirm” end of April for Hero update
We’ve had a lot of questions from people wanting to know if we’ve heard anything about a possible release date for the HTC Hero’s ROM upgrade, so we figured there was no harm in asking HTC themselves. We didn’t expect to get any sort of firm confirmation, but we wanted to clear up the rumours that have been flying around about a 16th or 24th April upgrade date that have been flying around. Here’s what HTC had to say:-
“Thank you for your enquiry about rom upgrade
Some of the phones in our Android line up including your Hero are due to receive an upgrade, and it is scheduled to be released starting at the end of April. Your phone should be upgraded Over-The-Air. You can expect a pop-up message on your phone when connected to the internet once it is ready. When the upgrade is ready, we will notify you via our website and on various social media networks including Twitter and Face book.”
So, it’s not exactly a firm date, but it does suggest that the people that have their fingers crossed for the 16th April will have to keep ‘em crossed for a few days more.
Edit – We should have mentioned that this was a response from HTC UK in relation to the European Hero.
***UPDATE – Turns out this was untrue. HTC have now admitted the update won’t appear until June.**

Does this include just the Sprint version or does it also include the Cellular South version? or are they basically the same thing with a different PRL coding?
I am *DONE* crossing fingers, and wishing in one hand and crapping in the other, because I’m so tired of waiting on Sprint and HTC to get their act together and release a decent Android 2.1 update for Sprint’s HTC Hero. I rooted my Hero last weekend and installed the excellent (and unbelievably stable) Fresh 2.0d ROM based on an Android 2.1 leak. My Hero LITERALLY feels and responds like a new and much faster phone! Rooting and installing alternative ROMs isn’t for everyone – and if you do it you MUST follow directions to a “T” and backup your phone! – however, I strongly recommend those who are technically inclined to do just that and enjoy a truly fast and responsive smartphone…
@ Arellias- Sorry, I should have qualified that, this would be fore the European Hero, but I’d imagine that the US version will be getting it’s update around about the same time.

It seems like every day brings another story like this: just keep being patient and HTC/Motorola/Sony Ericsson/Samsung will eventually get around to updating your phone. By the end of April, Android 1.5 will be a full year old…how patient can people be?
It’s pathetic, and it makes me so glad that I waited until the Nexus One was available in my country and bought that, even though I was more interested in the Milestone’s form factor. Back in January and February, while I was waiting, I was really torn about it, but these days I wouldn’t dream of recommending an Android phone sold by anyone but Google.
Unless you’re willing to take matters into your own hands, like VAStateOfMind, buying a non-Google Android phone is just a recipe for heartbreak.
I am sorry to hear that it got pushed back AGAIN.
Is this a ruse that HTC employ to get people to buy Hero?
Put it this way…
HTC knows they pushed out a phone that has an older OS and to shore up its sales, it promise an OS upgrade…now end of April will be into its 5th month of the original promise of upgrade…this may be good news but to me, it is old news and the lack of action is very telling.
Even the Sony Ericsson x10 is using the same method…getting people to buy the x10 with the promise of OS upgrade. I hope both companys’ integrity in this matter is intact.
