I’m sure there are many folks out there who, within 10 minutes of cracking open the cellophane wrapping on their phone’s box, are researching how to gain root access. This can be a daunting process for the uninitiated, but great mobile unlocking site theunlockr.com recently posted a guide that simplifies the process greatly:-
1. On your phone (G2/HTC Hero), goto Settings, Applications, and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.

This one’s for the HTC Hero/G2 users. One thing I’ve noticed since I started using the phone, is that the wi-fi is turned off when the device enters sleep mode. It comes back on again shortly after you wake the phone up, but the device still uses the mobile data services during sleep mode to update any web-based apps (such as email, Twitter and the lke). I have a slightly unusual wifi setup at home where I have a wireless access point that doesn’t give out IP addresses via DHCP, so any devices that attach to my wireless network need to be have static IP addressing set.
