Boffins create proof of concept “botnet” from infected iPhones and Android handsets

Derek Brown and Dany Tijerina of computer security firm TippingPoint, have managed to convince just under 8000 smartphone users to download and install an app called WeatherFist, which, as you’d expect, is a weather forecast app. But, it’s not just giving it’s users weather forecasts, it’s also been uploading their GPS coordinates and telephone numbers to a TippingPoint server.
The app was put together as a proof of concept botnet as part of a presentation at last week’s RSA Conference. Brown and Tijerina claim that it would be a simple matter ...

Third version of Android NDK now available

The latest release of the Android Native Development Kit is now available for download, as announced on Google Android Developers blog yesterday. The most interesting addition is Open GL ES 2.0 support. Open GL ES 2.0 will offer Android phones (only those running Android 2.0 or later unfortunately) much improved 3D graphics - an area in which Android has previously been found wanting when compared to the likes of the iPhone 3GS.

Google to launch App Store for Business

Mashable are reporting that Google are set to launch an app store targeting business users at some point over the course of the next week, possibly as early as tomorrow. To my mind, this is a good move for Google. They need a strong catalogue of enterprise apps if they have any plans to make in-roads in tempting the corporate market.
The existing apps market receives a lot of criticism due to it being occasionally difficult to navigate. It’s also full of all sorts of nonsense apps such as soundboards and ...

Apps we’d love to see on Android

Following a discussion conducted in a bar over the weekend (the best kind of discussion as far as we’re concerned), we thought we’d put together a list of the applications and games we’d most like to see being released on the Android platform. We’d love to hear your suggestions too. Who knows, maybe some enterprising and dynamic developer is reading this and will roll up his or her sleeves and start coding one of your suggestions.

Truckbot – an Android powered robot

A couple of enterprising web engineers called Tim Heath and Ryan Hickman are using an Android phone as a ‘brain’ for a fully mobile robot they have created. At the moment, it’s nothing more than a cardboard wagon with a phone on top and it doesn’t do very much more than roll around, but it’s creators see a lot of potential in the little fella that they call – “Truckbot”.

Truckbot uses a G1 phone for it’s brain, tying in with the phones on board compass, and later versions will utilize ...

Confirmation emails for free Android phones start to reach developers

You’ll no doubt have heard the news that Google are giving out free Nexus One or Motorola DROID phones to Android developers who have apps with over 5,000 downloads and an average rating over 3.5 stars. There were initially some concerns that this was a hoax designed to get developers’ personal details which prompted comments and tweets from Google officials which went some way to ease the worries, but there were still a few developers out there who were wary. Well, Mario from Badlogic Games got in touch yesterday to ...

Deliverace, stunning 3D race game, coming to Android soon

Whilst browsing Badlogic Games’ blog, I spotted the video at the bottom of this article. It’s an upcoming Android game from Pixelbite, the team behind the Polarbit published Raging Thunder 2. Check out the video, if the Android version looks anywhere near as good as the video, this could be one hell of a sweet game. There are a lot of really promising looking Android titles being released this year that could really raise the standard bar by quite a distance, which, let’s be honest, is exactly ...
